eBook | How to Prepare for a Successful 3D Work Instruction Pilot

June 9, 2023

Standard or Standardized Work Instructions (SWIs) are instructions that have been specifically designed to improve the efficiency and consistency of manufacturing processes. Clear SWIs make the performance of Operation and Maintenance (O&M) tasks easy to remember, repeat, and execute. With one standard across the board, implementing, managing, and improving workflows also becomes more streamlined. SWIs – issued in the form of printed matter i.e., a mix of text and images – were subsequently upgraded to EWIs or Electronic Work Instructions, often comprising 2D pdfs with illustrations. Increasingly, however, the demand is for 3D work instructions.

Companies have realized that there is more to the digital upgrade than providing soft copies of traditional work instructions. Circulating PDF, Word or Excel files via email is not the greatest way to achieve operational excellence. 3D work instructions score much higher on visualization, understanding, and interactivity. Operators find it simpler and faster to follow instructions from 3D models that simulate the actual process, part, or operation. One of the tangible advantages of 3D work instructions like Mentor is that each step of every process can be understood better by zooming in, rotating, enlarging, and replaying.
